How-to say “make X (ADJECTIVE/NOUN)” with X を (ADJECTIVE/NOUN) + する

To express that something makes a certain object a certain adjective or noun, the verb する, which means is used. This grammar construct is very similar to the (ADJECTIVE/NOUN) + なる construction. For adjectives, the stem of the adjective is used with the respective particle, depending on whether it is an い-adjective or a な-adjective. For い-adjectives, the particle く is used and for な-adjectives, the particle に is used. The particle に is also used for nouns.

髪をちょっと短くしてください。
Kami o chotto mijikaku shite kudasai.
(Please make my hair a bit shorter.)

このケーキを大きくしましょうか
Kono cake o ookiku shimashouka?
(Shall we make this cake bigger?)

図書館にいるから、静かにしてください。
Toshokan ni iru kara, shizuka ni shite kudasai.
(Since you’re in a library, please make yourself quiet.)

教室をきれいにしました
Kyoushitsu wo kirei ni shimashita.
(I made the classroom clean/I cleaned the classroom.)

誰を鬼にしましょうか
Dare wo oni ni shimashouka?
(Who should we make the oni/Who should be “it”?)
